Interim art chief at UALR leaving

The interim chairman of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Department of Art and Design will begin a new position in North Carolina next year, according to an announcement by Penland School of Crafts.

Maria "Mia" Hall will become director of the Penland School of Crafts on Jan. 1. Penland is a 1,200-student art school located in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hall is originally from Sweden and earned a master's of fine arts in furniture design and woodworking from San Diego State University in 2006 before coming to Arkansas, according to her website. Hall has been on UALR's staff since then, teaching furniture design and other crafts courses, according to her website. She has been interim chair of the Department of Art and Design since 2016.

Hall also serves on the board of directors for the THEA Foundation and the John and Robyn Horn Charitable Foundation.

Hall's husband, David Clemons, has been an artist in residence at UALR and teaches at Penland, according to the school's announcement.

Phone and email messages to Hall and staff members at UALR were not returned Tuesday.
