Dominican Republic declares national mourning for Pope Francis

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has declared official mourning across the Dominican Republic on April 22, 23, and 24, 2025, in honor of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. The declaration, issued through Decree No. 216-25, highlights the late pontiff’s global influence, humility, and dedication to peace and reform within the Catholic Church.

Though Pope Francis never visited the Dominican Republic, he maintained strong ties with the nation, offering solidarity during times of tragedy—most recently, by praying for victims of the April 8 entertainment center incident. The decree orders the national flag to be flown at half-mast at military and public institutions and instructs the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior to ensure compliance.
