Rhode Island celebrates Quahog Week
The 9th annual Quahog Week is back across the Ocean State. This week, running Sunday, May 11 through Saturday, May 17 celebrates the state's industry, commerce, and culinary surrounding the state clam. The icon of Rhode Island has been known to draw tourists in over the years, especially since large-scale quahogs had been placed for a time in airports across the country to promote tourism.
This week is aimed at celebrating those who farm quahogs across the state, those who have made it their livelihood, and also those who clam as a hobby. Christina and Mario spoke to Jordyn Kaslunger, Department of Environmental Management Fisheries Specialist, and Molly Moran Ogren, Seafood Marketing Collaborative Chair. They provided some insight into the hard-working men and women behind the quahog fisheries and why it is important to celebrate the shellfish each year.
Dozens of restaurants will be celebrating the week with specials on quahogs and seafood dishes. Participating restaurants include Matunuck Oyster Bar, George's of Galilee, Pizza Marvin, Purslane Eatery, Salty Wine Bar, Midtown Oyster Bar, Oberlin, and Gift Horse, to name a few.
