Bermuda Day Celebrate with Caution Sobriety Check Point Begin

As the sun sets over the turquoise waters of Bermuda, the island buzzes with anticipation. Tonight marks the beginning of the long Bermuda Day weekend—a time of parades, music, culture, and island pride. But as festivities ignite in every corner of the island, so does the need for vigilance.

Starting tonight and continuing through Monday, May 26th, sobriety checkpoints are being set up across all nine parishes of Bermuda: St. George’s, Hamilton, Smith’s, Devonshire, Pembroke, Paget, Warwick, Southampton, and Sandys. That’s the entire island. The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) has confirmed a full-scale operation to monitor and intercept impaired drivers—ensuring everyone gets to and from their celebrations safely.

And already, the work has begun. Two individuals have been arrested tonight for impaired driving, signaling a serious warning to others.

“We love our people, we love our culture,” says a community spokesperson. “But if you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Get a designated driver. Catch a cab. Stay home. Whatever it takes—just don’t put lives at risk.”

The message is clear: Drive sober or don’t drive at all.

Beyond impaired driving, BPS will also be targeting those who carry bladed articles or firearms, or engage in any anti-social behavior. A heavy police presence will be visible throughout the island during the holiday to deter and address any disorder.

Bermuda, the world is watching us this weekend. Let’s show them the best of who we are. Celebrate with joy. Celebrate with respect. And most of all, celebrate safely.

Have a happy and safe Bermuda Day weekend.
